Tribeca Film Festival Coverage 2008
This is the seventh year of the festival and once again I'll be covering it. Robert De Niro, Jane Rosenthal and Craig Hatkoff founded the Tribeca Film Festival in 2002 following the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center and the consequent loss of vitality in the Tribeca neighborhood in Manhattan. To spur the economic and cultural revitalization of lower Manhattan through an annual celebration of film, music and culture, the festival's mission focuses on assisting filmmakers to reach the broadest possible audience, enabling the international film community and general public to experience the power of cinema and promoting New York City as a major filmmaking center.
Since its founding, the festival has attracted more than two million attendees from the U.S. and abroad. The festival has generated more than $425 million in economic activity for New York City. With over 250 films and 1,000 plus screenings in both 2006 and 2007, Tribeca Film Festival has become one of the most prominent film festivals in the world. The festival's line-up offers moviegoers a wide variety of independent films including documentaries, narrative features and shorts, as well as a program of family-friendly films. The festival also features panel discussions with personalities in the entertainment world and a music lounge produced with ASCAP to showcase up and coming arists.
The Tribeca Film Festival and Universal Pictures will premiere Baby Mama, written and directed by first-time feature filmmaker Michael McCullers (Saturday Night Live writer). This opening night film starring Amy Poehler and Tina Fey (Saturday Night Live) are joined by cast members Greg Kinnear, Dax Shepard, Romany Malco and Sigourney Weaver. Saturday Night Live creator Lorne Michaels produced the film with John Goldwyn.
