Memoria sem Visao (Sightless Memory)

HD Premiere, US Premiere

Synopsis:

“Anonymous, solitary remains of a collective memory, bordering on the arcane vision of a metropolis’ progress, resisting the timeless oblivion of the daily traffic of  tens of thousands of cars.”

“Sightless Memory” is my first cinematic project as a director. Previously, my career had been aimed at documentary direction and editing functions for the main Brazilian cable TV network, GLOBOSAT. From this experience, I would like to highlight the non-fiction productions “Paulo José – Um Auto-Retrato Brasileiro” (Paulo José – A Brazilian Self-Portrait) and “O Evangelho Segundo Jece Valadão” (The Gospel According to Jece Valadão), both directed and edited by myself, with Joel Pizzini as a partner.

The photography of “Sightless Memory” was based on Alain Resnais´ documentary short film techniques, mainly due to the use of moving shots to capture spaces of a present time, but through a memory’s contemplation movement. The use of systematic master-shots by Kátia Coelho´s photography can only be properly appreciated in HDTV exhibition. I believe that digital cinema no longer needs fickle close-up image aesthetic in order to legitimize itself as an alternative to the use of film in cinema.

In this documentary, we used the first video camera that works with speed variation (Panasonic-Varicam) and we recorded several six-frame-per-second images. However, instead of using Fast-Motion, as it would be expected, these images are actually exhibited at six-frame-per-second speed. It resulted in tracks that evidence the passage of time inscription over the image.
The whole movie soundtrack was composed based on an Electro-acoustic conception, edited and mixed by the musician Michelle Agnes. Under the inspiration of Dziga Vertov´s works, Agnes made the music for this movie using only sounds from the surrounding area reality, without the use of any musical instrument.
