Domino

Rented the movie Domino the other night. It was about Domino Harvey, a real-life female bounty hunter.  Keira Knightley played Domino, a young, very delicate-looking, attractive, hot-tempered, daughter-of-a-celebrity who leaves her career as a model to become a bounty hunter.

The movie follows her entrance into the profession and some of the various"hits" she took part in.  Though not entirely true, it was larged based in the truth of Domino's real-life.

Overall, the movie wasn't bad, but I didn't really like the filming.  The film quality felt very home-video/made-for-TV movie style.  It was shot in that yellowish-orange tinting that seems to be very popular these days.  It was narrated (which I generally dislike), it repeated key lines and ideas continuously (heads you live, tails you die) - almost MORE so than Spiderman (with great power comes great responsibility) - and it was sometimes rather hard to follow.  There was one part in particular where the characters come under the influence of drugs.  The filming style changes somewhat, in an effort to make the viewer "feel" what the characters are going through.

However, it soon becomes difficult to discern what is real and what isn't.

What follows is an odd series of events that don't seem to tie into the story, yet still were put into the film.  It made following, understanding and enjoying the film very difficult.

If you do decide to watch it, I recommend checking out the special features. They have one in particular that talks about the real Domino Harvey.  Seeing who she was really makes you realize that Keira was the best actress who could have played the role (visually very similar) though you think initially she looks silly being so small and carrying large weapons.

All in all, not one of my favorites, but I certainly didn't hate it.  I would give Domino a grade of B-.

Domino gets a grade breakdown as follows:

Story:  A.  Very intriguing person and worthy of retelling.

Acting:  B.  Keira Knightly was great.

Visuals:  D.  My filming style was very distracting and disturbing.

Originality/Innovation:  D.  The filming was trying to be unique and original but it was so off-putting to me that it effected my overall impression of the movie.

Enjoyability grade:  B.  Knowing it was a true story made it all the more enjoyable.

Overall grade:  B-.  Not bad, not great.  Good.

DVD extras:  A.  Hearing the real Domino was more interesting to me than watching the movie of her life.
