Casper-Death is Everywhere

Casper the Friendly Ghost has always, always been one the sickest, most twisted concepts that Hollywood has to offer. At its core, it is a tragic, tragic story, think about it, Casper is a kid! So he died as a kid and its a story focused on kids! Wow! How did this concept ever make it off the ground? Truly, it is something that a stoned goth girl would theoretically be marketing to a studio, how did this thing get made into a cartoon in the first place? Just weird.

Casper, like so many films aimed at children, relies on name recognition. Casper is a particularly good one, because so many of the parents, who will be buying the tickets, know and remember Casper and somehow think its harmless, while missing all the perverseness inherent in the of the core story. Casper, is a CG updating and money grab that exploits the high name recognition of the Casper name. Is there a story? Seriously, like that matters, this is just a money grab and it worked as the film grossed over $250 million dollars.

The CG is okay, but Casper has little to offer as entertainment for your kids. There are much better choices out there and you would be wise to steer clear of this turkey if at all possible. I am sure there is a Woody Woodpecker CG extravaganza in the works as well, because god forbid something original and creative gets a greenlight. But at least death isn't at the heart of Woody Woodpecker, then again, who knows what the MBA's, lawyers and industrial psychologists that run LA have in store for us?
