Nathan Gibbs is a multimedia producer and artist whose work explores color and culture in the United States.
Based on visual and statistical profiling at different moments in time, Gibbs has been classified as white, Hispanic as well as Middle Eastern. His work draws attention to the breakdown of categories. He considers white privilege to be a core theme that has both infused and masked itself in U.S. American identity.
His work has been exhibited internationally including the Getty in Los Angeles, the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, the Hong Kong Art Centre, the Argos Festival in Brussels, Galapagos Art Space and the Remote Lounge in New York City.
In the late 1990’s, Gibbs developed his skills in photography, audio and video production, graphic design and music composition. In 2000, he received his BS in Electronic Media from Abilene Christian University in Abilene, Texas, where he won awards for his student work.
In 2002 and 2003, he hosted Border Pop Radio, a weekly Latin-alternative college radio program on WRPI Troy, NY. He also taught media production courses through local after-school programs for at-risk youth.
In 2004, he received his MFA in Electronic Arts from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY. His thesis work focused on race and identity.
Gibbs is currently incubating new ideas, exploring the cultural borderlands between the U.S. and México.
Artist's Statement:
Crayons in the video were shot against a blue screen and placed in scenes shot with the same digital camera. This video was edited and composited in AfterEffects. While this is a fairly simple piece in terms of technical elements, I am available for freelance projects in audio/video production, photography and online media.
