Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem

Here Is What You Need To Know:

Um?  The first “AVP” movie was surprisingly fun and even a tad innovative, just a tad, but Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem isn’t too impressive.  In fact, I was rather disappointed.  So what’s the problem?  Well, the script is silly. One-dimensional, cliches rack atop cliches. And then there is the cinematography, which is very, very problematic.

The cinematography and directing borders on disasterous at times. Why? Much of the movie is so dark that it is difficult to get a firm grip on “whose is who” and “what is what” especially during pivotal battle sequences between the Aliens and the Predators.  The “Brothers Strause,” Greg and Colin, were apparently music video directors, but one would never guess this from Requiem.

Frequent readers know I don’t usually “bash” or “rip” too hard on talent and crew, but the arrogantly monikered “Brothers Strause” really screwed up what was already a bad script.  Should they have really been given this job?   Here is what you need to know-wait for cable, wait until nothing else is on.  Disappointing.

What Was Cool:

I love the Alien/Aliens films, and I love the Predator films, including the underrated sequel.  I also thought AVP was quite a surprise and was looking forward to Requiem. Yet I quickly discovered that this is just a film to avoid.  Some of the visuals are decent (when you can see them). But the script is so stupid, so barren of originality or creativity, that you are likely to be left irritated.

That said, Requiem has one very unexpected saving grace in the socio-political commentary forced into the film.  For a bit, Requiem departs from its cliched mold long enough to make an surprising statement or two.  Regardless of your politics, it was just plain nice to have the boredom broken up.  Yes, this film was often boring.

What Was Stupid:

I could really go off the deep end here, okay, let’s just focus on the cliches.
