Appleseed (2004)
Here Is What You Need To Know:
For animation and anime fans Appleseed is a no-brainer as the animation is pretty cool from beginning to end. The less than clear storyline is a bit of a different story as the audience is required to fill in blanks and deal with some real dips in energy and action. However, no doubt, Appleseed is a beautiful animated feast for the eyes and will be amazing in high-definition.
The film takes place about 100 years in the future after the Third World War, some say we are already in the Fourth World War as this is written, but that is a different review all together, isn't it. We follow a female solider named, Deunan who is taken out of the wastelands and into city that is inhabited by a mixture of humans, cyborgs and machines called Bioroids. Deunan also possess a key piece of information that is vital to the story.
What Was Cool:
-Animation is most definitely the highlight of the film, as the story has paper thin and run of the mill.
-Appleseed has a strong and likable, albeit somewhat two dimensional female lead.
What Was Stupid:
-The story isn't stupid, its just not very interesting and not very new. This is too bad, but typical of the vast majority of the big budget animated pieces from Japan. The story gets the job done and moves the characters from situation to situation, but in the end is flat.
-Appleseed lacks character development which, again, is a shame because the animation sparkles and shines at times.
The Film's Real Genius or Geniuses:
-Many, many gifted animated worked so many hours on Appleseed and it shows.
