Enemy Mine
Here Is What You Need To Know:
Director Wolfgang Petersen isn't a popular guy with some of the reviewers at HDFEST. The Perfect Storm and Poseidon in particular have annoyed more than one reviewer and to be sure those are weak films and in the case of Poseidon, well, Poseidon is the poster child for everything that is horribly wrong with Hollywood. Enemy Mine is a Wolfgang Petersen film that doesn't suck.
Based about 100 years into the future Enemy Mine is the simple but powerfully effective film about a solider that crashes after his craft is damaged and discovers that he has crashed in the same area as a enemy solider. Dennis Quaid, whose acting career has been sporadic, is strong in the role of the human Davidge and Louis Gossett Jr is great as the make-up encapsulated Jeriba. What really gives Enemy Mine its punch is that the two not only learn to get along but one of them is having a baby. Enemy Mine is a science-fiction film about heart and character development and a good example of the kind of science-fiction that Hollywood needs to produce more often.
What Was Cool:
-The make up was pretty darn good for its day.
-The simple, age old story of learning to love the enemy is given a new twist on a alien planet.
What Was Stupid:
-This falls into the not-exactly-stupid category, but the film could have been helped with a little more action, you know give you breeders what you want, blood, guts and sex.
The Film's Real Genius or Geniuses:
-Writer Barry Longyear created a very unique piece of science-fiction in that it is about cooperation and developing understanding.
Overlooked Performance/Accomplishment:
-Louis Gossett Jr. does a fine job under all that latex, rubber and paint. Let's give him a hand.
