Freejack

Here Is What You Need To Know:

Freejack is one of those films that science-fiction fans who have seen it, seem to either love it or hate it, but to some extent it has largely been forgotten.

Part of the polarization is that the premise is odd, in that the story is really a fusion of time travel and mind transfer. What happens is that time travel is possible in the year 2009, yes 2009, as the movie hit theaters in 1992, and one can be yanked out of time just before the moment of their death and their bodies sold to some rich guy or gal somewhere.

Emilio Estevez, who has starred in other science-fiction classics such as the unforgettable, very unforgettable, Maximum Overdrive, plays a race car driver who is snatched just as his car becomes a smoke cloud. Mick Jagger is surprisingly good as the terminally ill billionaire who will be buying his body. There is, of course, a breeders love story between our race car driver Alex and his love interest Rene Russo, that really just distracts from the main story. Anthony Hopkins is also dropped into the mix and just doesn't seem as though he belongs. Freejack's problem is simple, its idea, while original is not fully developed and the script crumbles into a sort of cat and mouse thing and a love story. In the end, Freejack just never takes off.

What Was Cool:

-Some of the ideas had promise, but were never developed.

-Mick Jagger was better than expected

-Rene Russo was better than ever

-Anthony Hopkins was good but his character was an odd addition to the script

What Was Stupid:

-The film just isn't that solid

-Emilio Estevez is more painful than his brother
