Ghost in the Shell
Here Is What You Need To Know:
The year is 2029 and the technology used to interface man and machine has developed at a pace that most today would find a little outlandish. A cybernetic female cop, imagine a super-sexy Robocop that's less Frankenstein and more hot, is in charge of hunting down a hacker with nearly ethereal abilities called the Puppet Master. You probably can already tell if this is your kind of film or not.
Ghost in the Shell is involved and a bit cerebral in parts, but it is also gory and mesmerizingly gorgeous at times. The film elegantly blends traditional animation and computer generated animation in a way that few had seen at the time. Is Ghost in the Shell a anime classic? Sure.
What Was Cool:
-A strong female lead is great for a change. She may not be completely human exactly, but its a start.
-Great action and gun play throughout but Ghost in the Shell mixes it up with more than a fair amount of gray matter action for the thinking woman.
-Some of the most beautiful animated female nudity you probably have ever seen.
-What was cool was the animation, as Ghost in the Shell makes it difficult to take your eyes off the screen.
-The cyber based script is lacking gigantic robots doing battle and teenagers with spiking hair getting close-ups as they scream before battle, that is always nice.
What Was Stupid:
-Ghost in the Shell is well done and is something of a classic.
Story B+ (At times the story floats around a bit, but for the most part it is solid and consistent.)
Use of Science A+ (Ghost in the Shell really delivers the science and asks the audience to contemplate some pretty big topics and issues that may be closer than any of us might care to imagine.
Acting B+
Portrayal of Women A
Quality of Animation A+ (The animation in Ghost in the Shell is some of the best animation I have seen. Many of the sequences are likely to stick out in your mind.)
Style/Sex Appeal A (The entire film has a marvelous style and Major Motoko Kusanagi is pretty hot stuff, for a cartoon character anyway.)
Enjoyability Grade A
Home Theater/HD Factor A
Overall Innovation A
Overall Grade A (This is one of those films that animation and/or science-fiction freaks must see.)
A Little Fact About Cherie:
I am into all this cyber stuff. God only knows where this will all be we are old farts. Then again as someone pointed out to me recently where are the moon bases? So you can never tell. Forty years from now, computers may only be slightly more advanced as unlikely as that seems.
