Ghosts of Mars

Here Is What You Need To Know:

-Those of you who have frequented my reviews know I am a fan of John Carpenter. I loved They Live and Escape from LA to site two films in particular.

Ghosts of Mars is a fun film but is more of a straight horror film with Mars used as a location set than it is a science-fiction film laced with social commentary. Ghosts of Mars is set a few hundred years in the future on a terraformed Mars. A small town has broken communication and a small group of police are sent to investigate only to find the town empty, and yes, without spoiling it, there are ghost.

To cut to the chase, the towns folk have become possessed by ancient Martian demons. The story suffers from holes and poorly thought through concepts and is mostly just a horror film set in space.

What Was Cool:

-The visual and special effects are a mixed bag as some of the sets and town shots look pretty low-budget while some of the make-up effects are pretty solid.

-Natasha Henstridge is great as Lt. Ballard and plays a very strong female lead.

-Lots of action sequences that are good enough for fans of action-horror.

What Was Stupid:

-The story wasn't up to Carpenter's standards but it isn't horrible, just flat.

-I could have done without Ice Cube, who must be looking to become the new Ice-T of science-fiction films.
