ARTISTIC STATEMENT
I wrote Travius years ago as a vehicle for an actor named Jody Wodehouse, who had been featured in several short films of mine. My goal was to come up with a premise that would lend itself naturally to one actor playing a number of different roles. (I’d read Mex Tegmark’s wonderful cover article in Scientific American about parallel earths in multiple realities around that time, so that may have inspired the approach I took.) We started filming it with Jody in 2003, but he died before filming could be completed. Years later, I decided to rework the story a bit and refilm it as an entry in the Sci Fi Channel/Sundance channel Exposure contest. Travius is dedicated to Jody Wodehouse, whose versatility as an actor inspired me to write the script, and Jay Irwin, whose comic genius brought the characters to life.
Director Biography
Nils Osmar (http://www.nilsosmar.com) has made his living in the arts since 1986. He has worked as a fine and commercial artist, book and magazine illustrator, portraitist, cartoonist and comic book illustrator. His artwork has been published in the United States and Europe and featured in several national magazines.
Nils grew up in a wilderness area in Southern Alaska, where books were hard to come by. He used to walk down a mile through the woods to a tiny trading post store where people brought their books when they were through reading them. He loved (and love) good science fiction writers, such as early Robert Heinlein, Robert Silverberg and Ursula Leguin, and developed a lifetime interest in SF and storytelling.
In addition to his work as a visual artist, Nils has been active in Seattle's theater scene as an actor, director and playwright. (His stageplay DEMEA was produced several times at the Seattle Fringe Festival, before being made into an indy film.) He is also the creator of an award-winning television show (The Edge), and author of a short story collection, The Hungry Time (Wonder Publishing, 1996). His first feature film, XEROS, was filmed in 2003, and premiered at the Seattle True Independence Film Festival in 2005. (Excerpts from Xeros and several of his other films can be viewed online at http://www.youtube.com/user/Nilsosmar)
Nils has also taught a variety of classes and workshops for over ten years, at theASUW Experimental College, Shoreline Community College, and other schools.
