Artist Statement:

At the time, Tashai was really drawn to remaking dolls, ones that had ended up at thrift shops and garage sales. She’d bring them home and transform them into mythical characters. We thought it might be interesting just to document the process of this transformation from the hair and face paint removal through to the making of new clothing, wings and such. But as the project developed, it became clear that the symbolism of this act was quite powerful and mythological in nature. The fantasy story lines of mythical creatures dancing around a fairy ring as the Red Fairy comes to life and
the struggles of an ordinary doll as she tries to bust free from her box just seemed to fit.
