Derek Sonic Thunders Biography
Derek Sonic Thunders is a freelance Animator/music video director based in Wellington New Zealand and is the founder of “Dead On Animation” and “Love Not Money Productions”.
Derek has had no formal training in film production or animation and taught himself animation/filming/editing in 2005 making “fan” videos for international bands including The Misfits and Nirvana. He has since made several videos for New Zealand artist as well as working on animated TVC for New Zealand and Australia.
Derek primarily works alone doing all stages of production including script writing, prop and set construction, cinematography, lighting, filming and editing.
The Shot Bands music video for “Songs about drinkin’ ‘n’ dyin’” is the first in a series of stop-motion animations using Action men and Barbies as the puppets. In 2006 it won the “knack award” (high production value done on limited budget) at the Kodak music video awards in New Zealand and has been featured in several animation exhibitions around New Zealand.
He is currently working on several music videos for New Zealand artists in both animation and live action and is also working on pre-production for his first stop-motion animation short film.
