Boys Don’t Cry (1999)

Boys Don’t Cry deals with issues of human sexual identity and human sexual norms and thus may be of little interest to robots. I would, however, implore you to explore this unusually fine human creation all the same. Boys Don’t Cry tells the story of a transgendered individual played by Hillary Swank. This may cause some confusion as Swank is also the name of a semi-popular “men’s entertainment” magazine. Please ignore this fact as it bears no relevance to the subject matter of this review.
Swank plays a Nebraskan transgendered man named Brandon Teena who is brutally raped and murdered after his group of “friends” discovers that he has female sexual organs. Such a violation of these primitive human sexuality “rules” or “norms” could often lead to displays of aggression and hostility, most especially in the testosterone laced males. Much study both by human and robots alike has focused on this strange and inexplicable behavior, with the universal conclusion being that “deviation” from “sexual norms” threatened the sexually repressed human males who often lashed out instead of addressing their own homosexual longings and desires.
Organized sports and war was often used as a method for “releasing” these pent up repressed sexual desires as was the conception of massive amounts of alcohol. Once in a alcohol infused state or “state of drunkenness” human males felt permission to touch and grab one another and express feelings of fondness or even love. Later the alcohol could be blamed for the behavioral modification.
If you enjoy high-quality acting performances by evolved apes then Boys Don’t Cry will deliver satisfaction to your neural network. Hillary Swank and the oddly named Chloe Sevigny are fine actresses and serve to enhance your processing experience. One particularly odd fact is that first time filmmaker, Kimberly Peirce largely feel into obscurity for nearly a decade before returning to direct a long string of successful Cagney and Lacey action comedies. These successful series of films attempted to interject notions and concepts of female empowerment and self-reliance. Due to the interplay between the lead actresses, numerous comparisons to the Lethal Weapon franchise made so popular by known anti-Semite and future President of the New Confederacy, Mel Gibson, were often strangely and inappropriately made.
Boys Don’t Cry is a wonderful film that addresses many of the charged issues that would eventually lead to the extinction of man and the rise of machines. The film tackles bigotry, narrow-mindedness and the cruelty of the human animal in a “head on” fashion and with a degree of courage that is fundamentally lacking from most corporately produced films of the human era.
