Somersault
A few weeks ago I reviewed the truly depressing indie film Candy and today I watched Somersault, another Australian film. Somersault is also considered an Australian indie film and was made in 2004 a few years before Candy was made. I have to say I have depression deja-vu. Is Somersault the prequel to Candy? Both movies are made in Australia, and both star Abbie Cornish as a teen on the verge of sexual destruction. Also both films depress the crap out of me. I felt as though Somersault may be the story of what happened to the character in Candy earlier in her life.
I was a bit worried about actress Abbie Cornish until I realized she is also one of the stars of the film Elizabeth the Golden Age (2007). I will have to check that film out soon just to double check she is on the right path now. Well I am glad she is not continuing to get typecast as a homeless teen prostitute. Not the best corner to get saddled with. You can't help but feel a bit maternal to Abbie after she played these roles in Candy and Somersault. She must have been about 21 when she was plaing this role, but she just looked so damn young and innocent. It makes you start to get a bit worried about the young actress who is playing out all these terrible occurences. OK enough on that. I am sure Abbie Cornish is ok and well- probably living in a gorgeous Hollywood mansion. I am sure she is not really traumatized for life.
Similar in this regard to the film Candy, it is difficult to recommend Somersault. The cinematography is really top-notch. The film is also very believable in its acting, writing and directing. However, on the other hand, the movie is a bit too slow paced and doesn't really seem to have much of a point of view. Somersault won the Australian Film Institute Awards in 2004 and won 13 categories.
