Cloverfield
CLOVERFIELD: UNLIKE ANYTHING YOU’VE EVER SEEN
Cloverfield is a revolutionary take on the action/horror genre with 84 minutes of rollercoaster highs and lows. It is eye popping with things you see and things you don’t. But people with motion sickness: BEWARE.
Rob Hawkins (Michael Stahl-David) is leaving for a job in Japan. His brother Jason (Mike Vogel) and Jason’s girlfriend Lily (Jessie Lucas) throw him a surprise going away party. They invite Rob’s crush Beth (Odette Yustman). At the beginning of the party nobody knows that Beth and Rob slept together and that Rob never called her. This is all being documented on camera by Rob’s best friend, Hud (T.J. Miller). Hud has a crush on Marlena (Lizzy Caplan). As the party gets into the late hours of the night, the city is suddenly attacked. Buildings are being hit. The Statue of Liberty is decapitated. It is up to these group of friends to stick together and get out of the city while trying to dodge what is chasing them.
Originality is high with this first person account. The story has been told before but this has a twist. Its like you are being told this tale for the first time. The cast is made up of relative unknowns. You feel like you could be watching you and your friends. Lizzy Caplan, who plays Marlena, looks like a young Jennifer Beals. The action keeps you on your toes and never lets up. The first shot of what is attacking is not in focus but just as terrifying if you had a close up. The head of the Statue of the Liberty lands in the middle of the city. It is both shocking and unsettling.
Cloverfield is heart pounding in the sense that you will feel that you just worked out after watching this film. It is the new Blair Witch Project. If you don’t react, you don’t have a pulse.
