HOT FUZZ: A HELL OF A GOOD TIME

Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg have done it again (Shaun of the Dead) with Hot Fuzz, a British comedy that will please all audiences.  Simon Pegg and Nick Frost pair up onscreen just as they did with Shaun of the Dead and do for cop buddy movies what they did for the campy horror film.  It is hilarious with a who’s who of British actors.

Nicholas Angel (Simon Pegg) is a decorated police officer in London.  He is doing such a good job that he is making everybody else look bad.  He is promoted to Sergeant and sent to the small village of Samford.  Then people keep showing up dead because of “accidents”.  Nobody believes Nicholas when he claims they aren’t accidents but murders.  Nicholas fights his inspector and fellow police officers to uncover the truth.

The story is strong up until the end.  There are clever quips and refreshing plot lines for a buddy cop film.  You don’t know who to suspect of the crimes.  There are a number of one liners that will leave you in stitches.  Simon Pegg and Nick Frost are a perfect match.  They have a chemistry that comes across well on screen.  You can tell they are buddies off screen.

Supporting players include Jim Broadbent, Timothy Dalton, Bill Nighy, etc..  All are funny in their own right.  The murder sequences are graphic and campy, not unlike the violence in Shaun of the Dead.  It is a new way of filmmaking that these British gents have brought to the movie industry that is original and unique.

The story loses some of its steam towards the end of the film.  It starts to go in all different directions, making you feel like they didn’t know how to end the movie.  They go all over the place but then they bring it all back together.

This is a new style of filmmaking.  Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg have brought life back to comedies along with Judd Apatow and gang.  It is fun, pure and simple.  Here’s to hoping there are more to come.
