Oceans Moview Review

OCEANS: BEAUTIFUL BUT COLD

Oceans is Disney's follow up to Earth.  It contains astonishing clips of sea life in action.  But it doesn't establish a connection with its audience the way Earth does.  In Earth four families of animals are followed.  There is not a focus on a small group of its inhabitants in Oceans, to its detriment.

In Oceans, we are witness to the vast amount of living creatures that call the water their home.  There is the obvious (fish).  To the magnificent (whales).  It is an eat or be eaten world that is shown over and over again.  Some of these scenes are heartbreaking such as with the sea turtles.  Others are humorous as sand is thrown to startle a hunter.  But as beautiful and wondrous as all of these are, a personal touch is never made.  Which leaves the story a little boring because there is no interest vested. And it switches gears abruptly in the last half hour, making that part of the film feel like an afterthought (as heartfelt as it may be).

Unlike Earth, where we see the mamas and the babies having a relationship and all the hardships they go through on a daily basis, which leaves a lasting impression.  Sensory overload is present as Oceans shows so much to see.  One of the first scenes is a group of dolphins racing through the water like they are on a mission.  It will not only take your breath away, you will also have to take in all the birds diving in the water trying to capture their lunch.  It is something so basic but beautiful at the same time.

Focusing on a small number of families like in Earth would make the film more intimate.

Oceans is a gorgeous film to look at, even if it will soon be forgotten once the show is over.  This is due to an abundance of things to see, making it hard to concentrate on just one thing.
