PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: AT WORLD’S END

PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: AT WORLD’S END: THOUGHT IT WOULD NEVER END

With Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, Gore Verbinski, cast and crew draw this successful trilogy to a close.  The visuals are magnificent.  Unfortunately, that is the only bright spot.  The film is too long.  It would have benefited greatly if it had been an hour shorter.  Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack has lost his appeal.  The plot is overcomplicated.  The films don’t leave on a high note.

Elizabeth Swan (Keira Knightley), Will Turner (Orlando Bloom), and Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush), have teamed up to save Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) from Davy Jones’ (Bill Nighy) Locker.  They need him as all nine pirate captains are uniting to team up against Lord Cutler Beckett (Tom Hollander).  They want to bring back Calypso, the sea goddess, and they need all nine coins of the pirates to do so.  Elizabeth, Will, Barbossa, and Tia Dalma (Naomie Harris) travel to the end of the World to find Sparrow.  Once he has been rescued, they return to fight the evil Lord Beckett.

This story is too intricate for a movie about a Disneyland ride with too many subplots.  Scenes dragged on, such as our first glimpse of Jack Sparrow.  This causes the film to lose its humor.  Depp as Sparrow doesn’t shine as brightly.  This is attributed mostly to the dialogue but Depp’s timing is off with his delivery also.  The dialogue is silly and recycled from the two previous films.  Keith Richards as Jack’s father was unnecessary.  You don’t see Captain Jack’s dad, you see an aging Rolling Stone, making it a bit sad.  Billy Nighy as Davy Jones shows a softer side.  But he is still slimy (literally and figuratively).  But visually the film hasn’t lost its touch.  The pirate ships are amazing.  The costumes are detailed but not cartoonish.  The scenery is beautiful.  The opening of the movie makes you feel as if you are on the ride at Disneyland.  The Black Pearl in the sand of Davy Jones’ Locker is a sight to behold, especially when it is moved towards the sea by crabs.

The storyline has gotten away from having fun in the last installment.  It tries too hard and loses its audience with length and pointless dialogue.  And it doesn’t help that Johnny Depp doesn’t look like he is having as much fun.

The first two Pirate movies were fun.  They have tried to do too much and lost sight of what made it a great ride to begin with.
