P.S. I Love You

P.S. I LOVE YOU: RETURN TO SENDER
P.S. I Love You can’t decide which way it wants to take its audience. With no chemistry between its two lead characters the movie dies (pardon the pun). Warner Bros could have saved themselves a lot of money and just made this into a Lifetime movie because that is about how good it is. Gerard Butler and Hilary Swank are fine actors but even they can only raise the movie a little bit above its sloppy and sappy storyline.
Holly (Hilary Swank) is married to Gerry (Gerard Butler). They fight all the time. He is carefree, she is a worrywart. He passes away from a brain tumor. On her 30th birthday she receives a birthday cake from him along with a tape recorder. The tape is Gerry from the grave telling her he will be sending her letters because he isn’t ready to say goodbye. Holly tries to get her life back on track with the help of the letters and friends and family.
The story is predictable. It has no pace, jumping from scene to scene without letting audience get to know the characters enough to care about them. With an ending that is too sentimental it loses its believability. It should be romantic but it feels forced. Some of the cast provide bright spots. Lisa Kudrow provides some comic relief with her good timing. But Harry Connick Jr. just looks uncomfortable as does Hilary Swank, even though she looks amazing. Her wardrobe and accessories are standouts. And not surprisingly, the sequences in Ireland are picturesque and beautiful.
The story is too sappy-you don’t believe these characters and their love for one another, even when we are shown their relationship through flashbacks. Holly just isn’t a likeable enough character for a heroine. She is too annoying and neurotic.
Don’t waste your hard earned money on P.S. I Love You. With this cast I would have expected more. Unfortunately the material is too syrupy and not compelling enough for you to buy the loving husband from the grave bit.
