RATATOUILLE MOVIE REVIEW

RATATOUILLE: C’EST MAGNIFIQUE

A scrumptious tale of a chef and his rat, Ratatouille, Brad Bird (The Incredibles, The Iron Giant) has cooked up a new recipe for his audience to taste.  It captures Paris and its monuments wonderfully.  It will give you hunger pains and make your mouth water.

Remy (voiced by Patton Oswalt) is a rat with gourmet taste.  His idol is Chef Auguste Gusteau (Brad Garrett).  When he is separated from his family, he ends up in Paris.  He comes upon his hero’s restaurant.  He spies Linguini (Lou Romano) the new garbage boy, trying to spice up the soup but only makes it worse.  Remy fixes it and the soup is a hit with the patrons.  When Linguini captures him, Remy convinces him not to throw him in the river.  He communicates with him that he can cook and that he will help him recreate the soup.  A relationship forms between the boy and Remy that results in stupendous new recipes that bring back the livelihood of the restaurant.  But when Remy’s family shows up and Linguini’s fame goes to his head, chaos ensues.

This is a completely unexpected story.  With each scene you anticipate a new dish along with the clumsiness of Linguini and Remy coming into to clean up after him.  It is unlike any cartoon you have ever seen.  It is refreshing to watch an original story unfold.  Janeane Garofalo as Linguini’s love interest Colette is unrecognizable.  She is curt and shrill with an accent that you don’t associate her with her but with the character.  You can taste the crumbly bitterness of the cheese as Remy bites into it, it is so vivid.  Paris is beautifully on display.  Don’t miss the glimpse of Notre Dame in the beginning as Remy discovers the city.  And the DVD extra of the collaboration between Brad Bird and crew with Chef Thomas Keller is a treat.

Don’t miss Ratatouille.  It will wet your appetite and leave you hungry for more.  This is a movie that is fun for all ages.
